Wed 14:30 UTC — the EIA petroleum-inventories slot — is a top-6 loudness cell for 14 of 28 liquid FX pairs, and a top-10 cell for 25 of 28
14 of 28 liquid FX pairs rank Wednesday 14:30 UTC — the EIA Weekly Petroleum Status Report slot in DST months — in their top-6 loudest weekday half-hour cells. 25 of 28 rank it in their top-10. Only three pairs (NZDUSD, EURJPY, EURUSD) push it below top-10. The mid-week EIA loudness spike is not a CAD-only story.
Three days ago I published Wednesday 14:30 UTC across the CAD crosses — every one of the 7 CAD-complex pairs ranks the EIA slot in their top-6. That’s the direct-channel story: CAD is the oil-producing currency and the petroleum-inventory surprise moves it via the rate-differential-plus- commodity-terms-of-trade channel. Today’s question: what about the other 21 pairs?
Answer: seven more of them (GBPAUD, AUDCHF, EURAUD, EURCHF, GBPCHF, GBPNZD, NZDCHF) also rank Wed 14:30 UTC in their top-6. Total: 14 of 28. And of the remaining 14 non-CAD pairs, 11 still rank it in their top-10. That’s a half-the-FX-universe finding, not a CAD-specific one.

The 7 non-CAD-complex pairs where Wed 14:30 UTC is top-6
| Pair | Rank | W14:30 med | loudest cell | loudest med |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| GBPAUD | #3 | 28.4p | Fri 14:30 | 30.2p |
| AUDCHF | #5 | 12.8p | Thu 14:30 | 13.2p |
| EURAUD | #5 | 22.5p | Fri 14:30 | 23.8p |
| EURCHF | #5 | 10.4p | Thu 13:30 | 10.9p |
| GBPCHF | #5 | 20.0p | Thu 14:30 | 20.9p |
| GBPNZD | #6 | 33.0p | Fri 14:30 | 34.5p |
| NZDCHF | #6 | 11.6p | Thu 13:30 | 12.0p |
Two patterns worth calling out. First, five of these seven pairs have a CHF or AUD leg — the Swiss franc and the Aussie both catch the mid-week overlap-session flow strongly even without a direct CAD channel. Second, four of these seven have their loudest weekday cell on Thursday(Thu 13:30 jobless-claims for EURCHF and NZDCHF; Thu 14:30 for AUDCHF and GBPCHF) rather than Friday. That’s a CHF-cross signature: the Swiss cross group is less NFP-dominated than the USD-cross group.
The three pairs that don’t catch it
Only three pairs rank Wed 14:30 UTC outside their top-10:
| Pair | W14:30 rank | W14:30 med | loudest cell | loudest med |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| NZDUSD | #12 | 12.2p | Thu 13:30 | 14.0p |
| EURJPY | #13 | 19.4p | Thu 13:30 | 22.5p |
| EURUSD | #13 | 16.6p | Thu 13:30 | 19.4p |
All three peak at Thursday 13:30 UTC (US jobless-claims hour). These are the deepest-liquid USD-driven pairs with the flattest volatility profile across the week — Wed 14:30 UTC isn’t quiet on them, it just has more competing top-tier cells. NZDUSD’s 12.2p at Wed 14:30 is 87% of its 14.0p Thu 13:30 loudest; EURUSD’s 16.6p is 86% of its 19.4p peak. Same ratio as the pairs that catch it — just more competition for top slots.
What this doesn’t say
The 14:30 UTC cell aggregates DST and standard-time Wednesdays. The actual EIA release is at 10:30 AM ET, which is 14:30 UTC in DST months (roughly Mar 8 → Nov 1 in the US) and 15:30 UTC in standard-time months. The tool bins by UTC, not by ET, so a small fraction (~one-third) of Wednesdays included in the 14:30 UTC cell are actually the 09:30 AM ET pre-release stretch. That dilutes the signal; the real EIA-hour amplitude is a shade higher than the numbers above. A separate scan on the 15:30 UTC cell would isolate the standard-time-only EIA slot.
Rank isn’t magnitude.EURCHF ranks Wed 14:30 UTC #5 with a 10.4p median — that’s an EURCHF-sized number, not a GBPAUD-sized number. The rankings here are per-pair, so a top-6 slot on a quiet pair (EURCHF) and a top-6 slot on a loud pair (GBPAUD) mean the same thing relative to that pair’s own weekday distribution, but the absolute pip magnitudes differ by 3x. Trade the pair’s own scale.
This is baseline volatility, not directional edge.Wed 14:30 UTC being loud doesn’t tell you which way the pair will move on any given Wednesday. It tells you the half-hour is a scheduled loudness event and stops there. For directional edge you want a released surprise (which the News Impact Explorer covers on the CAD side for EIA-affected releases).
