Australia Employment Change on AUDJPY: 21 of 26 big-beat prints sent the pair up 35.6 pips at 15m, with a cleaner beat-side walk than on AUDUSD
198 non-contaminated Australia Employment Change releases on AUDJPY, 15-minute window. Medians walk −18.2 / −21.9 / +1.7 / +19.5 / +35.6 pips big_miss → big_beat. Pct-up walks 25 / 15 / 53 / 75 / 81 percent. 21 of 26 big-beat prints sent AUDJPY up. The walk is monotonic on median at every window from 1 minute out to 1 hour and holds on the beat side through EOD.
The AUDUSD version of this same first-Thursday-of-the-month release was covered on 2026-08-02 as one leg of the two-employment-reports contrast post. This is the JPY-cross version, and it changes the picture in one specific way: the beat-side pip magnitudes are a shade larger (+19.5 / +35.6 vs +14.7 / +31.75 on AUDUSD) because the JPY-cross adds a second directional channel — AUD strengthening AND JPY as a low-yielder in the carry-adjacent trade.

The 15-minute bucket table
| Bucket | n | 15m median | p25 | p75 | Pct up (15m) |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| big_miss | 8 | −18.20 | −35.55 | −0.13 | 25% |
| small_miss | 39 | −21.90 | −35.55 | −5.80 | 15% |
| in_line | 77 | +1.70 | −7.30 | +19.90 | 53% |
| small_beat | 48 | +19.45 | +0.78 | +39.42 | 75% |
| big_beat | 26 | +35.60 | +9.65 | +47.75 | 81% |
The pct-up column reads 25 / 15 / 53 / 75 / 81— strictly monotonic on the beat side, and near-monotonic on the miss side once you notice that small_miss (15% up) is more unanimously down than big_miss (25% up). The reason is sample size, not signal reversal: big_miss n=8 is small enough that a single contrarian print (2011-01-19: unemployment print co-released with a negative jobs surprise but AUDJPY ticked up briefly on Asia-session flows) moves the up-rate by 12.5 percentage points. Small_miss n=39 doesn’t have that sensitivity — 33 of 39 prints went down.
How AUDJPY compares with the AUDUSD version
The 2026-08-02 two-employment-reports post covered AUD Employment Change on AUDUSD as one leg of a two-way contrast with CAD Employment on USDCAD. Here’s the head-to-head at 15 minutes, same event, different pair:
| Bucket | AUDUSD med | AUDUSD up% | AUDJPY med | AUDJPY up% |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| big_miss (n=8) | −25.20 | 0% | −18.20 | 25% |
| small_miss (n=39) | −19.90 | 15% | −21.90 | 15% |
| in_line (n=77) | +0.10 | 51% | +1.70 | 53% |
| small_beat (n=48) | +14.70 | 77% | +19.45 | 75% |
| big_beat (n=26) | +31.75 | 85% | +35.60 | 81% |
Same sample size in every bucket (both instruments trade the same release on the same calendar), same directional interpretation, two different scoring channels. AUDJPY wins on beat-side pip magnitude (+35.6 vs +31.75 on big_beat). AUDUSD wins on miss-side unanimity — all 8 of AUDUSD’s big-miss prints went down at 15 minutes. That’s the striking number, and it’s the one to remember if you’re trading a bad AUD jobs print on the USD pair.
What this doesn’t say
The big_miss bucket is only n=8. A single contrarian print moves the up-rate by 12.5 percentage points. The median is directionally right but the exact magnitude has a wide distribution-free 95% CI around it — roughly −36p to −0.1p using the order-statistic method walked through in Stats for Traders #3. Read the finding as “directional edge is real, but the exact pip magnitude on big_miss is one-decimal-place noisy”.
The 4-hour window has a tail-bucket problem. Big_miss drops from n=8 (15m) to n=7 (4h) because one recent release doesn’t yet have a finished 4-hour candle. The remaining seven have a median of only −2.1 pips (vs −18.2 at 15m) because one big-miss print reversed sharply between 15m and 4h inside a 7-print sample. Don’t read the 4h big_miss collapse as a broken pattern — it’s a small-sample artifact. The beat-side buckets (n=25-43) stay stable through 4h.
The big_beat edge fades over the day.+35.6p at 15m becomes +11.0p at EOD — about 70% of the initial move is given back. The small_beat bucket is more durable (+19.5 → +21.0 pips), which is the pattern most FX desks recognise as “small surprises hold, big surprises overshoot and mean- revert”. If you’re holding past the first hour, small_beat is the bucket to sit in.
