27 of 28 liquid FX pairs' quietest half-hour of the week is on Monday
Iterate every pair in the Calm Zones catalogue and pull its minimum-median half-hour cell. 27 of the 28 answers are on Monday. The one exception is EURCAD (Wednesday 04:00 UTC) — and even that is in the same pre-London Asia sleep window most of the Euro-crosses landed on.
This is the mirror-image of the previous cross-pair post (“AUDNZD is the only major whose loudest hour isn’t London/NY overlap”). The loudest cells are heterogeneous across pairs — Thursday overlap for some, Friday NFP-time for others, Wednesday Sydney/Wellington for AUDNZD. The quietest cells are the opposite: uniformly Monday, in one of two clusters, for basically every pair a retail trader looks at.

Two things worth pointing at. First, the two clusters split roughly along the “which side of the pair sleeps first” line. Pairs where the sleepy leg is European (CHF, EUR, GBP-cross, NZD-cross) go quiet in the pre-London window at 04:00-04:30 UTC. Pairs where the sleepy leg is US/AsiaPac (USD-USD-crosses, JPY, AUD-USD) go quiet at 17:30-22:30 UTC. Second, the single quietest cell on record is EURCHF Mon 04:00 UTC at a 3.0-pip median range — an average 30-minute range you could easily overshoot with a single order-book bounce.
USDJPY’s Monday, hour by hour

USDJPY’s Monday has the shape most pairs share: two shallow troughs at 03:00 UTC (pre-London Asia sleep) and 21:30 UTC (post-NY handoff), separated by a London/overlap-driven bump that peaks at 14:30 UTC around 12.5 pips. The 21:30 UTC trough at 5.3 pipsis USDJPY’s single quietest weekday cell of the entire week — roughly 60% of the pair’s typical weekday-cell median (9.0p) and 31% of its loudest weekday cell (Thu 13:30 UTC, 17.0p).
Why Monday, structurally
Two mutually reinforcing reasons that stack.
Reason 1: weekend flow is already absorbed. When the FX market opens Sunday 22:00 UTC, whatever weekend news happened gets priced in over the first few hours as major market-makers re-open their books. By the time you reach any Monday cell in the trading day proper (past 00:00 UTC), the directional weekend flow has washed out. Compare that to Tuesday or Wednesday, where the previous day’s data prints are still driving positioning adjustments; those days start the Asia session with a residual flow that Monday doesn’t have.
Reason 2: Monday has the fewest scheduled tier-3 prints. US CPI, US retail sales, US PPI, US jobless claims (weekly, but Thursday), most European CPIs, UK CPI, UK employment, Japan CPI, Australian CPI, RBA/RBNZ/BoE/BoJ/ECB/Fed decisions — almost all are scheduled Tuesday through Friday. Monday’s data calendar is dominated by second-tier releases (ISM, PMIs, minor European industrial data). Fewer scheduled surprises = fewer structural drivers of intraday range = quieter cells.
What this doesn’t say
“Quiet” is the median, not an every-Monday guarantee. The 5.3-pip USDJPY 21:30 cell is the median across 665 observed Mondays. Individual Mondays can and do produce much bigger ranges — the p75 for that cell is 7.6 pips, and the p90 is higher still. The finding is that this cell is typicallyquiet, not that it’s quiet on any given Monday. Post-BoJ Mondays and Golden-Week Mondays will not look like the median.
Bank holidays skew a specific Monday. Many major centres take Monday holidays (US Labor Day, UK bank holidays, Japan public holidays). Those holidays are already in the sample — the n_days_holiday counter for each cell reports how many. If your trading day happens to be one of those Mondays, the quiet cell will be even quieter than the median.
The one exception, EURCAD. The EURCAD Wed 04:00 UTC minimum is 5.95 pips; its Mon 04:00 UTC cell is roughly the same magnitude (both are the pre-London Asia sleep window). The tool happened to catch Wednesday winning by a fraction of a pip on this pair. Practically, the same “early European morning” window works.
