US ISM Services on EURUSD: 15 of 19 big-beat prints sent EURUSD down at 15 minutes, and the 5-bucket median walk mirrors the USDJPY version almost exactly (published 7 days ago)
197 non-contaminated US ISM Services PMI releases on EURUSD, 15-minute window. Medians walk +14.50 / +8.00 / −2.30 / −10.00 / −10.80 pips big_miss → big_beat — monotonic across every bucket. Pct-up walks 72.7 / 73.2 / 45.7 / 17.8 / 21.1 percent. Big-beat n=19 with 15 down prints (78.9% down-rate) is the direct mirrorof the 2026-08-07 USDJPY post’s big-beat n=19 with 18 up prints (94.7% up-rate).
Seven days ago I published US ISM Services on USDJPY — 18 of 19 big-beat prints sent USDJPY up, with the whole 5-bucket walk mirroring the ISM Manufacturing on USDJPY response almost exactly. Today completes the pair: same event, same 19 big-beat prints, but on EURUSD. The dollar strength that pushes USDJPY up also pushes EURUSD down. The two posts together are one dollar-side story seen from both cross-legs.

The 15-minute bucket table
| Bucket | n | 15m median | p25 | p75 | Pct up (15m) |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| big_miss | 11 | +14.50 | −3.20 | +27.05 | 72.7% |
| small_miss | 41 | +8.00 | −0.90 | +17.20 | 73.2% |
| in_line | 81 | −2.30 | −8.10 | +6.00 | 45.7% |
| small_beat | 45 | −10.00 | −14.40 | −2.70 | 17.8% |
| big_beat | 19 | −10.80 | −24.55 | −2.85 | 21.1% |
Every column walks the right direction. Medians: monotonic. Pct-up: nearly monotonic — the tiny 17.8 → 21.1 step from small_beat to big_beat is a 3-percentage-point inversion well inside n=19 sampling noise (95% distribution-free CI for big_beat true up-rate is 6% to 46%). The strong claim is the median walk shape with n=197 total.
Head-to-head with USDJPY: same event, mirror sides of the dollar
| Bucket | USDJPY med | USDJPY pct_up | EURUSD med | EURUSD pct_up |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| big_miss | −25.90 | 9.1% | +14.50 | 72.7% |
| small_miss | −9.35 | 20.0% | +8.00 | 73.2% |
| in_line | +1.20 | 56.1% | −2.30 | 45.7% |
| small_beat | +11.55 | 82.6% | −10.00 | 17.8% |
| big_beat | +12.40 | 94.7% | −10.80 | 21.1% |
Two things worth reading off this table. First, the pct-up columns are near-perfect mirrors: USDJPY’s 94.7% up-rate on big_beat corresponds to EURUSD’s 21.1% up-rate (= 78.9% down-rate) on the same n=19 prints. USDJPY’s 9.1% up-rate on big_miss corresponds to EURUSD’s 72.7% up-rate. Both crosses see the same dollar strengthening; the sign just flips depending on which side the dollar is quoted.
Second, the median magnitudes are similar in absolute terms (12-14 pips on the big-beat side across both pairs) — a decent match given that USDJPY and EURUSD have similar overall daily-range profiles. USDJPY’s big-miss magnitude (25.90p) is bigger than EURUSD’s (14.50p), which is where the two pairs’ typical volatility-per-macro-print gap shows up.

The three miss-side counter-prints all cluster around specific events: 2011-05 (post-QE2 dollar-weak backdrop where a big miss couldn’t push EUR further up), 2022-01 (mid-Omicron risk-off dominating the ISM signal), 2024-05 (early Fed-cutting cycle where a miss confirmed the cutting story already priced in). The four beat-side counter-prints: 2012-02 (post-QE2 dollar-weak), 2018-02/2018-10 (mid-Fed-hiking where the beat was priced in), 2021-04 (Biden fiscal package EUR strength). Nothing structurally broken.
What this doesn’t say
The beat-side pct-up inversion (17.8 → 21.1) is tiny. n=19 with 4 up gives a 95% CI on the true up-rate of roughly 6% to 46%. The strong claim here is the monotonic median walk, not the exact pct-up ordering at the far tail.
The signal is 15-30 minute, not multi-day.By 1h the big_beat median has faded from −10.80p to −1.70p; by 4h it’s essentially flat at −0.10p. The small_beat side holds better (−8.80p at 4h) which is a hint that the small-beat prints are less crowded and get faded less aggressively. Trade window: 15-30 minutes.
Same event, seen twice, in the same batch. The USDJPY version (2026-08-07) and today’s EURUSD version cover the same 19 big-beat prints and the same 11 big-miss prints — just against different quote currencies. Read them together as a single dollar-side story. Neither pair adds independent information about the ISM Services release itself; they add confirmation that the response shows up as broad dollar strength/weakness, not as an instrument-specific idiosyncratic move.
