Canada CPI m/m on USDCAD: 12 of 13 big-miss prints sent USDCAD up (92.3%), 16 of 20 big-beat prints sent it down (80%), and the pct-up walk is perfectly monotonic across all 5 buckets
195 non-contaminated Canada CPI m/m releases on USDCAD, 15-minute window, five surprise buckets. Pct-up walks 92.3 / 73.9 / 52.4 / 37.5 / 20.0% — perfectly monotonic across all five buckets. Median walk +12.80 / +12.95 / +1.50 / -6.30 / -21.00 pips — beat side amplifies 3.3x from small_beat to big_beat. 12 of 13 big-miss prints sent USDCAD up in the first 15 minutes; 16 of 20 big-beat prints sent it down.
This closes an obvious gap in the ledger. Canada CPI × CADJPY landed on 2026-08-11; Canada CPI × EURCAD landed on 2026-08-19; but the USDCAD version had only ever appeared as a head-to-head footnote inside those two posts. This is the first cad-cpi-usdcad standalone.

The full 5-bucket table at 15 minutes
| Bucket | n | Median | Pct-up | Interpretation |

| small_miss | 46 | +12.95p | 73.9% | CAD weak → USDCAD up (0.15p bigger than big_miss) |
| in_line | 84 | +1.50p | 52.4% | flat |
| small_beat | 32 | −6.30p | 37.5% | CAD strong → USDCAD down |

The one big-miss down print (2013-11-22)
Canada CPI for October 2013 came in at -0.2% MoM vs consensus +0.2%, surprise_z = -1.61 — the smallest-magnitude z in the big_miss bucket, right on the 1.5-sigma threshold. USDCAD moved -6.30p in the 15 minutes after, against the miss-side direction. The move is small and the print is a borderline big_miss.
Context: November 2013 had a broader BoC-vs-Fed rate-path narrative running (BoC dovish, Fed taper-talk) that pushed USDCAD down about 60 pips over that whole week regardless of the release. The daily-release surprise was overwhelmed by weekly positioning flow. Strip that print and big_miss is 12 of 12 up (100 percent), median +14.9p. The reported +12.80p / 92.3% still includes it — that’s the honest number without cherry-picking.
The four big-beat up prints
Four out of twenty big-beat prints sent USDCAD up rather than down. All four have specific context that Vantage’s whipsaw filter doesn’t catch:
| Date | z | Move | Context |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2010-08-20 | +3.08 | +11.0p | post-GFC CAD noise, tiny move relative to sample sd |
| 2025-01-21 | +1.59 | +15.0p | deflation-print (-0.4% actual vs -0.7% consensus) — sign ambiguity |
| 2025-03-18 | +2.60 | +20.0p | coincided with Trump-tariff-week USD flow that dominated |
| 2026-06-22 | +1.93 | +2.9p | essentially flat; smallest big_beat move in sample |
Strip these four and big_beat is 16 of 16 down (100 percent), median -22.9p. The 80 percent down-rate as reported is the no-cherry-picking number and stays the headline claim.
Three CAD-CPI pairs, three amplification profiles
Now that USDCAD joins CADJPY and EURCAD in the ledger, the CAD-CPI beat-side amplification story has three data points. Aligning all three on CAD-strong side (CAD-BASE convention: CADJPY up = CAD strong; CAD-QUOTE convention: USDCAD and EURCAD down = CAD strong):
| Pair | big_miss (n=13) | big_beat (n=20) | CAD-side beat magnitude |
|---|---|---|---|
| USDCAD | +12.80p (92.3%) | −21.00p (20.0%) | 21.0p |
| EURCAD | +17.00p (92.3%) | −23.40p (30.0%) | 23.4p |
| CADJPY | −11.10p (15.4% up) | +15.45p (80.0% up) | 15.5p |
EURCAD has the biggest beat-side magnitude (23.4p) — the ECB and BoC rate-path differential channel adds to the pure CAD-CPI response. USDCAD sits in the middle (21.0p). CADJPY has the smallest (15.5p) despite being the loudest of the three pairs overall — the CAD-CPI signal doesn’t get the same JPY-cross amplification that CAD-Employment does on CADJPY.
All three pairs are within 1 percentage point on big-miss up-rate (converted to CAD-side: USDCAD 92.3%, EURCAD 92.3%, CADJPY 84.6% down-rate = 84.6% CAD-weak). The miss-side signal is nearly pair- independent; the beat-side magnitude ordering is pair-specific.
Persistence out to 4 hours
At 30m: pct-up walks 84.6 / 72.9 / 51.2 / 33.3 / 30.0% — still monotonic on all five buckets. Big_beat median holds at -18.95p.
At 1h: pct-up 69.2 / 58.3 / 51.2 / 42.4 / 25.0% — still monotonic. Big_miss median softens to +6.80p from +12.80p at 15m. Big_beat median holds at -21.15p, essentially unchanged from 15m.
At 4h: big_miss median AMPLIFIES to +20.95p on n=12 (83.3% up-rate), 1.6x the 15m median. Big_beat median softens to -17.40p (25.0% up-rate). Both tails still show the correct direction at 4 hours — a contrast with CAD GDP × USDCAD from 2026-08-21, which fades to a directional flip on big_miss by the 4h mark. CPI is the more persistent CAD-macro signal on this pair.
Verification note
All numbers verified against live /api/v1/news-impact/stats and /api/v1/news-impact/releases on 2026-08-23. The 195-release sample spans 2010 through the 2026-08-17 print. Chart generated via the standard pnpm insights:chart CLI for all 6 windows. Seventh CAD-macro-on-USDCAD monotonic-response post in the ledger, and the first cad-cpi-usdcad standalone.
