The half-hour AFTER NFP is louder than NFP itself for 17 of 28 liquid FX pairs
For 17 of 28 liquid FX pairs, the Friday 14:30 UTC half-hour — the second half of the NFP hour, AFTER the release-time bar has closed — has a larger typical 30-minute range than the Friday 13:30 UTC release cell itself. The follow-through bar is louder than the release bar for a clear majority of pairs. Four more pairs peak at Fri 14:00 UTC (the middle half-hour). Only 10 pairs peak at 13:30 UTC itself — mostly JPY-crosses, where the first-minute-spike is enough to dominate the release bar.
Yesterday’s pair-loudest-quietest-ratio post established that Fri 14:30 UTC is a top-3 loudest cell for 21 of 28 pairs. That’s the ambient finding. This post narrows the question: for a trader sizing stops around NFP, is the release bar or the follow-through bar the one with more risk in it? Answer: for a large majority of pairs, the follow-through.

Three groups, one pattern
The 17 pairs that peak at Fri 14:30 UTC.Almost every non-JPY-cross falls here — EURGBP, EURCHF, GBPNZD, GBPCAD, GBPAUD, GBPCHF, EURAUD, EURNZD, USDCHF, CHFJPY (the JPY-cross exception), and most AUD/NZD crosses. The differences are small (typically 1-3 pips) but consistent. Practical interpretation: the release-time spike doesn’t fully price in the release for these pairs; the follow-through half-hour catches up.
The 10 pairs that peak at Fri 13:30 UTC. Six JPY-crosses (GBPJPY, EURJPY, CADJPY, AUDJPY, USDJPY, and the JPY-cross CHFJPY is the one JPY exception that peaks at 14:30), plus USDCAD, EURCAD, NZDCAD. Common thread: pairs where the first-minute spike is amplified by a specific structural feature (JPY safe-haven flow on any strong US print; CAD commodity-linked reaction that spikes with the release and settles quickly).
The 4 pairs that peak at Fri 14:00 UTC. EURUSD, AUDUSD, NZDUSD, GBPUSD — all major USD-crosses. For these pairs, the middle half-hour of the NFP hour is when the tape spends most of its second-order flow, presumably as institutional rebalancing hits the tape after the initial reaction has settled. These are the four highest-liquidity USD-major pairs in the panel, so the finding is probably driven by execution mechanics — bigger books need more time to rebalance.
Why the follow-through bar wins on most pairs
The Calm Zones tool measures median 30-minute HIGH-LOW range. The NFP release bar (13:30 UTC to 14:00 UTC) often has a big spike in the first minute or two followed by partial retracement over the rest of the bar — the peak-to-trough range is large but much of the movement happened in the opening seconds. The follow-through bar (14:00 UTC to 14:30 UTC) has 30 continuous minutes of position adjustment, and the peak-to-trough range tends to be structured differently: multiple waves of participant reaction as US traders wake up, algorithmic strategies get their initial fills, and equity market flow starts to bleed into the FX tape.
There’s also a second-order effect: US CPI y/y and other second-tier releases publish at 14:00 UTC on non-NFP Fridays, which the Calm Zones tool doesn’t separate out from the NFP-Friday universe. For pairs where the middle half-hour peaks (the 4 USD-majors), this may be picking up the CPI-on-non-NFP-Friday signal rather than a pure NFP follow-through. But the finding that the second half of the NFP hour is the loudest for the largest group of pairs (17 of 28) is robust — it doesn’t depend on which specific non-NFP release you attribute to any particular week.
What this doesn’t say
Median range is not the same as maximum range. This post uses the median 30-minute high-low. The maximum (worst-case) 30-minute range on Fri 13:30 UTC — the huge NFP surprises like December 2013, October 2015, or April 2022 — can be much larger than the median. If you’re sizing for a 95%-percentile scenario rather than the median day, the 13:30 bar looks worse than this post suggests. The tool exposes the per-cell p90 range for exactly this reason.
Small differences. On most pairs the 13:30 vs 14:30 differential is 1-3 pips out of a 15-30 pip base — not a huge effect. But the DIRECTION is consistent: 17 pairs one way, 10 the other way, on non-random splits (mostly JPY-vs-non-JPY). A small effect in the same direction across a big cross-section of pairs is more trustworthy than a big effect on one pair.
The 13:30-14:00 bar is not the same as an NFP-specific release-window study. The Calm Zones tool measures pooled Friday cells over all of 2010-2026; NFP-Friday cells are mixed in with non-NFP Friday cells. For an NFP-specific release-window analysis (moves conditional on the actual NFP surprise), see the News Impact Explorer’s NFP releases — for example the earlier NFP-on-gold post which conditions on surprise buckets.
