US ISM Manufacturing on EURUSD: miss side is perfectly monotonic (+12 / +3.8 / +1.2 pips), but the beat side has a DOUBLE inversion — small_beat drops EURUSD further AND more consistently than big_beat does
198 non-contaminated US ISM Manufacturing PMI releases on EURUSD, 15-minute window. Miss side is textbook: +12.00 / +3.80 / +1.20 pip median walk, pct-up 83.3% / 71.1% / 54.4% — perfectly monotonic across both metrics. Beat side has a DOUBLE inversion: small_beat median magnitude (−8.40p) is bigger than big_beat (−7.00p), AND small_beat down-rate (80.5%) beats big_beat (66.7%). The smaller beat surprise moves EURUSD further down, more consistently, than the bigger one does.
This is the first-ever US ISM Mfg × EURUSD anchor in the ledger, and the natural mirror to 2026-08-14 US ISM Services × EURUSD. Services had small_beat n=45 −10.00p 17.8% up and big_beat n=19 −10.80p 21.1% up — magnitude ordered (big_beat larger), pct-up inverted (small_beat more unanimous down). One inversion. Manufacturing (today) has small_beat n=41 −8.40p 19.5% up and big_beat n=21 −7.00p 33.3% up — magnitude AND pct-up both inverted. Two inversions.

The 15m double inversion, spelt out
| Bucket | n | Median | Pct-up | Interpretation |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| big_miss | 12 | +12.00p | 83.3% | US-macro very weak → USD-weak → EURUSD up (unanimous) |
| small_miss | 45 | +3.80p | 71.1% | US-macro weak → EURUSD up |
| in_line | 79 | +1.20p | 54.4% | flat |
| small_beat | 41 | −8.40p | 19.5% | US-macro strong → EURUSD down (STRONGEST signal on the beat side) |
| big_beat | 21 | −7.00p | 33.3% | US-macro very strong — smaller magnitude AND weaker down-rate than small_beat (DOUBLE inversion) |
A single inversion (magnitude OR pct-up flipping between the two beat buckets) shows up on many releases and usually reflects sample thinness or one prominent counter-print. A double inversion — both metrics simultaneously — is uncommon, and it points at a genuinely non-linear response function on the beat side. On ISM Mfg × EURUSD, additional beat-side surprise buys you less directional edge past small_beat, not more.
Miss amplifies, beat fades
The 15m double inversion is only half the story. Walk the same table forward in time and the two sides diverge sharply.
| Window | big_miss med | big_miss %up | big_beat med | big_beat %up |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 5m | +9.50p | 83.3% | −6.50p | 28.6% |
| 15m | +12.00p | 83.3% | −7.00p | 33.3% |
| 30m | +13.40p | 75.0% | −4.10p | 38.1% |
| 1h | +22.05p | 66.7% | +2.60p | 52.4% |
| 4h | +16.40p | 72.7% | −1.20p | 47.6% |
Miss-side big_miss median almost doubles from 15m to 1h (+12.00 → +22.05p). Beat-side big_beat median crosses zero (−7.00 → +2.60p). By 4h the miss side still holds at +16.40p with a 72.7% up-rate, while the beat side is a flat −1.20p at 47.6% up-rate. Miss signal amplifies; beat signal evaporates.
This is the opposite of the 2026-08-21 CAD GDP × USDCAD shape, where the miss-side signal decays past 1h and only the early window carries it. On US ISM Mfg × EURUSD the miss side is the durable pattern, and the beat side is 15m-only noise that washes out.
Comparison with the ISM Services sibling on the same pair
Same pair, related event, different beat-side shape. Both are USD-strength/weakness releases translating through EURUSD.
| Sample | big_miss | small_beat | big_beat |
|---|---|---|---|
| ISM Services (2026-08-14) | n=11 +14.5p 72.7% | n=45 −10.0p 17.8% | n=19 −10.8p 21.1% |
| ISM Mfg (today) | n=12 +12.0p 83.3% | n=41 −8.4p 19.5% | n=21 −7.0p 33.3% |
On Services the beat-side magnitude is ordered (big_beat −10.8p bigger than small_beat −10.0p) but pct-up is inverted (17.8% < 21.1%) — ONE inversion. On Manufacturing (today) BOTH are inverted: small_beat magnitude −8.4p beats big_beat −7.0p AND small_beat 19.5% up beats big_beat 33.3% up — TWO inversions. Miss side is more unanimous on Mfg (n=12 at 83.3% up vs Services n=11 at 72.7%). Same event family, distinctly different tail shape.

All numbers verified against live /api/v1/news-impact/stats and /api/v1/news-impact/releases on 2026-08-22. Sample spans the full 198-release history through 2026-08-01. Chart generated via the standard pnpm insights:chartCLI. First-ever US ISM Mfg × EURUSD anchor in the ledger — clearing an eight-times-flagged “considered but not used” item that had been held since 2026-08-14 for spacing from the Services sibling.
