Between 20:00 and 22:30 UTC on any weekday, every liquid JPY-cross has its half-hour range compress by 1.16× to 1.51×relative to its overall weekday. Every pair’s absolute-quietest weekday half-hour lands inside that window. USDJPY’s Mon 21:30 UTC cell at 5.3 pips is the quietest single cell in the whole seven-pair × weekday-cell matrix.

Every one of the seven cross’s “quietest cell in window” lands on a Monday, and 5 of the 7 land specifically at Mon 20:00 UTC. The two exceptions (CADJPY and EURJPY at Mon 22:30 UTC) are still in the same window, just at the far end where NY has already closed.
Why this window, structurally
The 20:00-22:30 UTC window is a multi-session handoff gap that specifically catches both legs of a JPY-cross without an active home market:
- London is closed.LON session ends at 16:00 UTC (DST) or 17:00 UTC otherwise. By 20:00 UTC, European desks have been closed for 3-4 hours. There’s no active EUR, GBP, or CHF flow from London.
- NY is winding down. Cash equities close 20:00-21:00 UTC in DST months. FX desks are still open but volume has already fallen 40-60% from the 12:00-16:00 UTC London-NY overlap peak. Between 21:00 and 22:00 UTC most NY dealers close their books.
- Tokyo hasn’t opened yet.Tokyo session starts 00:00 UTC. Nothing in JPY-specific interbank flow is active until then. The Sydney open at 22:00 UTC (DST) handles the earliest Asian slice but doesn’t generate JPY-specific flow.
Result: for a JPY-cross, BOTH legs of the pair are effectively homeless during 20:00-22:30 UTC. There’s no natural flow driver on either side. The compressed range is a structural consequence, not a statistical artefact.

- Mon 00:00-06:00 UTC — the Sunday-late-open zone. Covered as part of the 2026-08-04 Monday-quietest post — 27 of 28 liquid pairs (including all 7 JPY-crosses) have their absolute-quietest weekday cell on a Monday.
The three zones don’t overlap and together account for roughly a third of the 24-hour weekday cycle. Between them, the JPY-crosses are only in a “loud” state (medians at or above the overall weekday median) for about 40% of any weekday — mostly the London-NY overlap 12:00-16:00 UTC.
What this doesn’t say
Quiet isn’t immunity to news. These are median cell ranges — the 90th percentile still exists, and any scheduled Tokyo-open news at 22:50 UTC (BoJ Summary of Opinions sometimes runs then) or unscheduled headline at 21:30 UTC can break the pattern for a single cell. The window is quiet on median but long-tailed on the right.
Broker-close cells excluded.Friday 22:00 and 22:30 UTC cells are excluded from all the numbers above because most retail brokers cut the FX session at 22:00 UTC Friday. Those cells show zero-range on many observations and would artificially bias every pair’s “20:00-22:30 median” downward if included.
Ratios use median-of-medians.The “1.16× to 1.51×” numbers are median-of-medians across cells in the window vs across all weekday cells — not means. A mean-of-means comparison would be somewhat different (probably wider) because both distributions have right-skewed tails.
