Tuesday 03:30 UTC — the RBA Cash Rate decision slot — doesn't crack the top-100 loudest weekday half-hours of ANY of the 28 liquid FX pairs. Even AUDUSD has it at only rank 138/240. Median rank across pairs is 194.5 (81st percentile of QUIETNESS). Deadest central-bank slot in the whole calendar.
Tuesday 03:30 UTC — the RBA Cash Rate decision slot, active on 11 of 52 Tuesdays a year (21% direct density) — doesn’t crack the top-100 loudest weekday half-hours of any of the 28 liquid FX pairs. Best-ranked is AUDJPY at 120/240. Median rank across all 28 pairs: 194.5/240 — the RBA slot sits at the 81st percentile of QUIETNESS. Deadest central-bank decision slot in the whole calendar.
Third post in a 3-day CB-slot rank arc, closing the trilogy after Wed 18:00 FOMC (2026-09-02) and Thu 12:00 BoE (2026-09-03). Ordering: BoE = loud (median rank 42), FOMC = quiet (108), RBA = DEADEST (194.5). 27 of 28 pairs have RBA slot deeper (quieter) than FOMC; 28 of 28 have RBA deeper than BoE. The direct-density explanation FAILS — RBA fires MORE than BoE and FOMC — so the neighboring-cell baseline carries the story.

The four best-ranked pairs are all AUD- or NZD-quote pairs (AUDJPY, AUDNZD, AUDUSD, NZDJPY at rank 120-139), which is the expected AUD- and NZD-family fingerprint. But even they don’t crack top-100. The bottom of the table is the CHF- and GBPCHF-family pairs at rank 220+ — those pairs have their entire weekday-loudness concentrated in the London/NY overlap, so the Tokyo-lunch cell drops to nearly the deepest rank on the table.
The Tue morning ramp on AUDUSD — RBA sits in a LOCAL trough
On AUDUSD, the neighbouring-cell ranks tell the story cleanly:
| Tuesday slot (UTC) | AUDUSD rank | Median range | Note |
|---|---|---|---|
| 02:00 | 90 | 9.30p | Tokyo pre-lunch, active |
| 02:30 | 149 | 7.80p | Tokyo lunch begins |
| 03:00 | 137 | 8.00p | Tokyo lunch |
| 03:30 | 138 | 8.00p | RBA Cash Rate slot ← today's focus |
| 04:00 | 172 | 7.00p | Tokyo lunch, deepest trough |
| 04:30 | 164 | 7.30p | Tokyo lunch |
| 05:00 | 144 | 7.90p | Tokyo returns |
| 06:00 | 55 | 10.10p | Frankfurt pre-open |
| 07:00 | 25 | 11.40p | London pre-open |
| 08:00 | 27 | 11.30p | London open |
| 13:30 | 16 | 12.60p | US NFP / CPI window |
| 14:30 | 5 | 14.00p | US-morning peak |
The RBA slot at rank 138 doesn’t even sit at the LOCAL top of its own Tokyo-lunch trough — 02:00 UTC (rank 90) is louder. On the 21% of Tuesdays that are RBA-active the 03:30 UTC cell IS the peak, but the other 79% of Tuesdays are Tokyo-lunch quiet, and the 21%/79% blend leaves the RBA slot at rank 138 = 57th percentile of QUIETNESS on AUDUSD, the RBA’s own currency pair.
The 3-CB comparison — direct density fails
| Decision slot | Fires/year | Direct density | Median rank across 28 pairs | Neighborhood |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Tue 03:30 UTC (RBA) | 11 | 21% | 194.5 (81st %ile quiet) | Tokyo lunch vacuum |
| Wed 18:00 UTC (FOMC, DST) | 8 | 15% | 108 (45th %ile) | US afternoon lull |
| Thu 12:00 UTC (BoE) | 8 | 15% | 42.5 (18th %ile) | US-macro-opens neighbor |
RBA has the HIGHEST direct-fire density of the three CBs (21% vs 15% for BoE and FOMC), yet it ranks DEEPEST — the direct-density explanation is exactly backwards. The neighboring-cell floor explains the ranks: BoE’s Thursday 12:30 UTC neighbour (rank 4 on EURGBP; US macro opens) lifts the BoE slot to rank 20; RBA’s Tuesday 04:00 UTC neighbour (rank 172 on AUDUSD; still Tokyo lunch) drags the RBA slot to rank 138 despite being an even more frequently active decision cell.
Even other Asian-hours CBs outrank RBA
BoJ Wed 01:30 UTC: AUDNZD at rank 9, 1/28 pairs top-20, 8/28 top-50. RBNZ Wed 01:00 UTC: AUDNZD rank 23, 4/28 pairs top-50. Both fire less often than RBA but land in a louder time-of-day — 01:00-01:30 UTC catches Tokyo’s late-morning active window before lunch closes it. This isolates the mechanism: it’s not about the RBA-as-central-bank per se; it’s about 03:30 UTC being the Tokyo-lunch vacuum. Any event firing in the same slot would inherit the same neighboring-cell baseline.
Trading implication — the RBA-slot floor
On the 21% of Tuesdays that ARE RBA-active, the 03:30 UTC cell does spike — the median-range aggregate blends 21% event-active with 79% Tokyo-lunch-quiet observations. If you can filter to just the RBA-active Tuesdays (the tool’s News Impact endpoint does this for you via /api/v1/news-impact/stats?event=FF:AUD_RBA_RATE), the median-range on AUDUSD at Tue 03:30 UTC becomes much wider. On non-RBA Tuesdays the same slot is a genuinely dead zone — a rare on-hours cell where 8-pip stops on AUDUSD are wider than the typical 3-4 pip 30-min range. Related event-response coverage in RBA surprises only move AUDUSD when they surprise (2026-08-01) — that post showed 156 of 174 RBA meetings didn’t move AUDUSD; today’s slot-rank finding is the calendar-hour counterpart to that event-conditional finding.
