BoJ decision window Wednesday 02:30-04:00 UTC ties Tuesday 03:30 RBA as the DEADEST central-bank slot in the calendar — Wed 03:00 UTC canonical centroid has median rank 195/237 across 28 pairs (essentially the same 194.5 the RBA slot posted yesterday). Zero of 28 pairs crack top-100 at Wed 03:00; even taking the BEST of the four candidate BoJ bins per pair still leaves 0/28 in top-100. Best rank AUDNZD at 117 (Wed 02:30 bin).
Bank of Japan monetary policy statements release between 11:45 and 13:00 JST (Wed 02:45-04:00 UTC), inside the Tokyo-lunch global vacuum. At the canonical mid-window Wed 03:00 UTC slot, median rank across all 28 liquid FX pairs is 195/237 — essentially TIED with the RBA Tue 03:30 UTC slot (194.5) covered 2 days ago. Zero of 28 pairs crack top-100. Best rank AUDNZD at 131 (55th percentile of quietness).
Fifth post in the CB-slot rank arc, extending the trilogy of Wed 18:00 FOMC (2026-09-02), Thu 12:00 BoE (2026-09-03), Tue 03:30 RBA (2026-09-04), and yesterday’s Wed 14:00 BoC (2026-09-05). Full ordering: BoC 13, BoE 42.5, FOMC 108, RBA 194.5, BoJ 195. Direct firing density (BoC 15%, BoE 15%, FOMC 15%, RBA 21%, BoJ 15%) does NOT predict cell rank. Neighboring-cell baseline does.

Every one of the 28 pairs’ best BoJ bin is Wed 02:30 UTC— the earliest of the four candidate half-hour bins. The 02:30 → 03:00 UTC rank gap is 15-40 positions per pair; that’s the structural fade as Tokyo lunch shuts down morning activity. AUDNZD gains the most from taking the best bin instead of the centroid: rank drops from 131 to 117 (14-position gain). USDCHF gains the least: 213 to 204 (9-position gain). Even the best-of-window measure yields 0/28 in top-100.
The Tokyo lunch fade — AUDNZD’s Wednesday morning
AUDNZD is the one pair with an Asian-morning loudest cell (top-10 rank on Wed 01:30 UTC). Its Wed morning rank walk shows Tokyo lunch shutting down volatility in 90 minutes of clock time:
| Wednesday slot (UTC) | AUDNZD rank | Median range | Note |
|---|---|---|---|
| 01:00 | 23 | 10.7p | Tokyo late-morning active |
| 01:30 | 9 | 11.2p | Tokyo pre-lunch PEAK |
| 02:00 | 55 | 9.8p | Tokyo lunch begins |
| 02:30 | 117 | 8.6p | BoJ earliest bin ← best BoJ |
| 03:00 | 131 | 8.4p | BoJ canonical centroid ← today's focus |
| 03:30 | 173 | 7.8p | BoJ later bin |
| 04:00 | 174 | 7.8p | BoJ latest bin |
| 04:30 | 202 | 7.1p | Tokyo lunch, deepest |
| 05:00 | 182 | 7.6p | Tokyo returns |
| 06:00 | 102 | 8.8p | Frankfurt pre-open |
| 07:00 | 49 | 9.9p | London pre-open |
| 13:30 | 39 | 10.2p | US-morning peak |
On the pair with the deepest Asian-hours edge, the BoJ window lands PAST the peak: rank drops from 9 (Wed 01:30 UTC, Tokyo pre-lunch peak) to 131 (Wed 03:00 UTC canonical BoJ slot) in 90 minutes of clock time. The pair recovers to rank 49 at Wed 07:00 UTC (London pre-open) and 39 at Wed 13:30 UTC (US-morning) — but never touches the BoJ window. The BoJ’s ~15.4% Wednesday density into ONE of four candidate bins can’t lift any cell above the vacuum baseline.
The 5-CB rank comparison
| Decision slot | Fires/year | Direct density | Median rank across 28 pairs | Neighborhood |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Wed 14:00 UTC (BoC) | 8 | 15% | 13 (5th %ile) | US-morning macro overlap |
| Thu 12:00 UTC (BoE) | 8 | 15% | 42.5 (18th %ile) | US-macro-opens neighbor |
| Wed 18:00 UTC (FOMC, DST) | 8 | 15% | 108 (46th %ile) | US afternoon lull |
| Tue 03:30 UTC (RBA) | 11 | 21% | 194.5 (82nd %ile) | Tokyo lunch vacuum |
| Wed 03:00 UTC (BoJ centroid) | 8 | 15% | 195.0 (82nd %ile) | Tokyo lunch vacuum |
BoJ and RBA are the two deadest CB slots in the calendar, tied essentially exactly at median rank ~195. Both sit in the same Tokyo-lunch vacuum. Both fire at rates comparable to the loud CBs (BoJ 15%, BoC 15%, BoE 15%) — but their cells never lift out of the vacuum baseline. Neighboring-cell floor beats direct density every time. If BoJ shifted its announcement window an hour earlier to Wed 01:30-02:30 UTC (Tokyo pre-lunch peak), the cell rank would jump from 195 to roughly 55 on AUDNZD alone — the same 90-min Tokyo-lunch fade the AUDNZD ramp table illustrates.
Correction note — Wed 01:30 UTC is not the BoJ slot
Two days ago the RBA-deadest post mentioned in a cross-reference that “BoJ Wed 01:30 UTC has 1/28 top-20 (AUDNZD at rank 9)”. That was a mis-labelling. Wed 01:30 UTC is actually the Tokyo pre-lunch peak-activity cell — the loudest Wednesday-morning cell on AUDNZD, but it’s NOT when BoJ announces. Per the BoJ Release Schedule (boj.or.jp/en/about/calendar/index.htm) Monetary Policy Statements land between 11:45 and 13:00 JST = Wed 02:45-04:00 UTC, which in the 30-min grid maps to Wed 02:30 / 03:00 / 03:30 / 04:00 UTC candidate bins. Today’s post uses those bins. The corrected BoJ-slot rank (195 median at 03:00, or best-of- window median 169) puts BoJ tied-with-RBA as joint-deadest CB slot — a very different reading than the mis-labelled Wed 01:30 UTC top-10 finding suggested.
