GBPJPY's loudest half-hour of the week is Friday 13:30 UTC
Across 802 Fridays of GBPJPY data since 2010, the median 30-minute range at 13:30 UTC is 28.3 pips. That’s the loudest half-hour cell on the entire weekly grid — 2.5x the median at Monday 03:00 UTC Asia, and above every other slot on every other day of the week.
This is one of those results that’s useful precisely because it’s boring. Nothing exotic happens at Fri 13:30 UTC — it’s the 30-minute cell that ingests the biggest scheduled US macro drops of the week (NFP on the first Friday of the month, US CPI and retail sales on other days, BoE/ECB decisions that land nearby). The consequence is that GBPJPY’s single most-active half-hour lands on the same clock every week.

The overlap band dominates
Ranking every weekday 30-minute cell by median range (n=237 cells with at least 500 observations), the top eight all sit inside the London/NY overlap window on Wed, Thu, or Fri:
| Slot | Session | Median range | p75 | p90 |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Fri 13:30 UTC | Overlap | 28.3 | 39.2 | 59.5 |
| Thu 13:30 UTC | Overlap | 27.9 | 39.8 | 54.3 |
| Fri 14:30 UTC | Overlap | 27.7 | 37.3 | 50.0 |
| Thu 12:30 UTC | Overlap* | 27.1 | 39.0 | 54.0 |
| Fri 14:00 UTC | Overlap | 27.0 | 38.7 | 51.5 |
| Thu 14:30 UTC | Overlap | 26.6 | 36.5 | 51.4 |
| Wed 14:30 UTC | Overlap | 26.6 | 36.5 | 46.2 |
| Thu 14:00 UTC | Overlap | 26.5 | 37.2 | 52.8 |
*The Thu 12:30 UTC cellis flagged DST-ambiguous — 12:30 UTC lands in the London/NY overlap during summer but London-only in winter, so the “Overlap” label is a summer-weighted average. In practice most weeks this “overlap” cell is still active enough to sit near the top of the ranking, but it’s the one row where the session label deserves a caveat.
What this means for GBPJPY scalpers
If your scalping strategy assumes a ~15 pip typical noise band per 30-minute cell (a fair rule for GBPJPY in Asia hours), that assumption breaks in the Wed–Fri overlap window. The median cell in that band prints ~27–28 pips of range; the p75 is 37–40; the p90 is roughly 50–60.
The practical read: stops sized for Asia noise get taken out during the overlap. Position size the pair by which cell you’re trading in, not by a global “typical GBPJPY range” that averages Asia and Overlap together and misses both.
And separately: if you want to be in cash for the loudest weekly window without avoiding all news, the tightest filter is Fri 13:30 UTC ± 60 min. That single one-hour band captures the highest-noise cell of the week for the pair.
